Black Forest Carved Wooden Jewellery / Trinket Box – Switzerland (Brienz), circa 1880–1900

A finely hand-carved Black Forest wooden box, dating to the late 19th century. The hinged lid is surmounted by a naturalistic bird in flight, carved in high relief with detailed plumage, perched on a textured ground. The sides are decorated with carved vine leaves against a stippled background, a typical motif of the Brienz carving tradition, symbolising abundance and the Alpine wine-growing regions.

The interior is fitted with its original padded silk lining, now aged but intact, suggesting the box was intended for use as a jewellery or trinket box. The piece is raised on a moulded plinth base with simple brass hinges.

This is a charming example of the skilled craftsmanship associated with the Black Forest region, and would have been sold as a luxury souvenir during the height of Alpine tourism in the late Victorian era.

Condition: Good antique condition overall, with wear consistent with age and use. The carving remains crisp; the interior lining shows wear and staining. Hinges in working order. No major losses noted.
