This small color lithograph by Jiří Slíva, Love Optic, is a typical play on words and images: eyeglasses turn into lips, while the inscription above them evokes both an “optics of love” and the sign of an eye clinic. The minimalist drawing, with a single striking red accent and a paradox at its core, is exactly the kind of subtle humor for which Slíva is renowned.

As a piece of art, it works best in a place where it can be read up close (a study, a library): at first it entertains with its idea, and afterwards one can no longer see the “world through love” in any other way.

Context of creation: Jiří Slíva often works with motifs of optics, wine, wordplay, and gentle irony. Love Optic thus fits into a whole series of similar lithographs (Wine Optic, Jazz Optic, etc.).

Technique: Lithography (stone printing) allows him to use a simple line, clean drawing, and a precisely placed color accent—here, the red lips within the glasses.

Humor and punchline: The piece operates on two levels—an immediate visual gag (glasses = mouth) and a second layer that reveals itself only after a moment (the inscription Love Optic as the sign of a very special optical shop).

Interpretation: It can be read as a subtle exaggeration suggesting that love changes the way we see the world—rose-colored glasses here turn into red lips.

Jiří Slíva (1947, Plzeň, Czech Republic) is a Czech graphic artist, illustrator, and cartoonist known for his subtle humor, wordplay, and stylized drawing. He studied economics and worked in the field for several years, but since the late 1970s he has devoted himself fully to art. His work includes humorous drawings, book illustrations, and fine art prints—especially lithography, etching, and drypoint.

Recurring motifs in his art include jazz, wine, philosophy, eroticism, and playful language. His works have been published in numerous European and American newspapers and magazines, and he has exhibited worldwide. Slíva’s art is represented in both private and public collections, and he is regarded as one of the best-known contemporary Czech artists in the fields of graphic art and cartoon humor.
