This is a fascinating and rare example of Calum Colvin's work titled CORVUS MONEDULA 2001.  The Covus Monedula is the full latin name of the Western Jackdaw bird belonging to the crow family.  Measuring 40.6cm x 30.5cm this Ilfrochrome print is in excellent condition.  It is also signed, titled, dated by Calum Colvin in ink verso.  It is also the sought after number 1 from a numbered edition of 60.

Calum Colvin (born Glasgow, 1961) is a Scottish artist whose work combines photography, painting, and installation, and often deals with issues of Scottish identity and culture and with the history of art. He has had solo exhibitions at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Scottish National Portrait Gallery, and Royal Scottish Academy and has a number of works in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art, New York, The Museum of Fine Art, Houston, The Tate Gallery, London and the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art in Edinburgh.

Born in Glasgow in 1961, Calum Colvin has exhibited his work nationally and internationally for over 30 years since graduating from the Royal College of Art in 1985.  He was also winner of one of the first Scottish Arts Council Creative Scotland Awards from which he created the acclaimed exhibition for the SNPG ‘Ossian, Fragments of Ancient Poetry’ in 2001.

Colvin’s constructed photographic artworks begin as large-scale studio ‘stage-sets’, tableaux of everyday objects, furniture and bric-a-brac carefully posed and theatrically lit.  Viewed from the fixed-point perspective of a large-format camera, painted trompe-l’oeil elements are introduced, integrating object and subject in a complex mise en scene. These are finally photographed on film, digitized and printed onto paper or canvas.
