Shimura Tatsumi
Born 1907 (Meiji 40) – Died 1980 (Showa 55) From Gunma Prefecture
A leading illustrator of the Showa era, alongside Sentaro Iwata. His real name was Sentaro. He dropped out of the design department of Kanagawa Industrial High School and became a student of Shūhō Yamakawa in 1924. Starting with the cover illustration for "Fujinkai" magazine the following year, he drew illustrations and cover art for magazines such as Kodansha, Hakubunkan, and Bungei Shunju, becoming a popular artist known for his depictions of beautiful women with long eyelashes and expressive eyes. He is also known for his illustrations for "Danjazezan" by Fusō Hayashi (Keitarō Hasegawa). Besides his work as an illustrator, he exhibited with the Seirinkai group (founded by students of Shūhō Yamakawa, including Shūmei Itō) and the Nichigetsu-sha art group (a post-war association of artists specializing in female portraits). After the war, he served as chairman of the Publishers' Art Association and vice-chairman of the Japan Writers' Club.
