Byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) - Gold leaf, Paper, Silk, Silver leaf, Lacquered wood, Gofun - Rinpa School-style - Japan - Early 18th century (Edo period)

A splendid tall six-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) featuring a refined Rinpa School-style painting in low relief, depicting a lush scene of bright white chrysanthemums 菊 (kiku) blooming along a thatched fence. The blossoms are surrounded by drifting clouds of gold leaf and areas of heavily oxidised, speckled silver leaf. The large flower heads are meticulously rendered in low relief using gofun 胡粉 (shell paste). Executed in natural pigments and ink on mulberry paper with gold leaf, the painting is bordered by two brocade silk bands: a slender blue inner border and a broad golden outer border. The screen is framed in black lacquered wood and fitted with large ornate protective metal hardware. Period: Japan – Early 18th century (Edo period) Dimensions: Total width 374.8 cm (2 × 63.8 cm, 4 × 61.8 cm); Height 168 cm Considering its age, the screen is in a very good condition with restorations mainly along the edges and hinges, and with traces of wear consistent with age on both sides. The reverse has areas of repapering. Please refer to the photos for a clear condition reference. This folding screen is well-suited for mounting flat on a wall and displaying as a single work of art. When shipped, we will include a certificate of authenticity.
