A splendid tall six-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) featuring a refined Rinpa School-style painting in low relief, depicting a lush scene of bright white chrysanthemums 菊 (kiku) blooming along a thatched fence. The blossoms are surrounded by drifting clouds of gold leaf and areas of heavily oxidised, speckled silver leaf. The large flower heads are meticulously rendered in low relief using gofun 胡粉 (shell paste). Executed in natural pigments and ink on mulberry paper with gold leaf, the painting is bordered by two brocade silk bands: a slender blue inner border and a broad golden outer border. The screen is framed in black lacquered wood and fitted with large ornate protective metal hardware.
