Kiku Yukimi Ishi’dôrô’ 丸雪見石灯籠 (snow-showing lantern with chrysanthemum) - Granite - Japan - Late Meiji period/Taishô period (Early 20th century)

An amazing four-part granite garden lantern, known as a ‘Kiku Yukimi Ishi’dôrô’ 丸雪見石灯籠 (snow-viewing lantern with a chrysanthemum design), crafted in greyish tones. This traditional Japanese lantern sits low to the ground. The term 'Yukimi' translates to 'snow viewing,' reflecting how the 'Kasa' 傘 (umbrella-shaped top) beautifully collects snow during winter, creating a picturesque scene. Each part of the lantern symbolizes a natural element: • The bottom 'sao' 竿 (post) represents 'chi' 地 (earth). • The 'chûdai' 中台 (central platform) above symbolizes 'sui' 水 (water). • The 'hibukuro' 火袋 (firebox), which holds the light, represents 'ka' 火 (fire). • The upper sections represent 'fû' 風 (air) and 'kû' 空 (void or spirit), reaching towards the sky. Notable features include the base with four feet, each detailed with a carved inner line that meets at an accolade point; the chûdai decorated with a wave motif in relief; and the hibukuro fitted with lattice window, a round sun, a crescent moon, and a rectangular opening for inserting light. The broad kasa is adorned with a chrysanthemum motif in relief. Approx. dimensions: Height 84 cm, Diameter 68.3 cm. Dating these lanterns can be challenging, but we believe this one is from Late Meiji period/Taishô period (Early 20th century). It boasts an outdoorsy patina from years spent outside and remains in a good condition with a chip from the kasa and chûdai. Please refer to the photos for a clear condition reference. We will use a wooden pallet and secure packing for safe transport. When shipped, a certificate of authenticity will be included.
