Hand-towel rack 手拭掛 (tenugui’kake) - Lacquered wood, Brass - Japan - Second half Edo period (18th century / Early 19th century)
An attractive lacquered wooden hand-towel rack 手拭掛 (tenugui’kake), an item that was part of the toiletry furnishings of the aristocracy 容色具 (yôshoku’gu).
The detachable frame is adorned throughout with scrolling foliage 唐草 (karakusa) enveloping Japanese arrowroot 葛 (kuzu). The ends are fitted with gilded brass hardware, finely engraved with matching karakusa and peony designs. The base rests on elegant double-lobed bracket feet.

Considering its age, the rack is in a very good condition with small wear consistent with age and use, like some minor lacquer losses along edges. Please refer to the photos for a clear condition reference.
