Item Description:
A sculptural nerikomi flower vase (花器 / 花入 / 花瓶) by the contemporary Japanese ceramic artist Koji Koyama – 小山弘治 (1947–). Built by hand with an asymmetrical, softly folded square body and an undulating organic rim, the piece showcases Koyama’s hallmark layering of colored clays and slips. Bands of pale cobalt, milky white and soft greys flow vertically, with occasional earthy flashes and a small moss-green accent. Delicate, stylized tree motifs appear like silhouettes within the strata, creating a poetic “landscape” effect. The high-gloss glaze pools and thins across the ridges, producing intentional pinholes, crawling and tiny burst bubbles typical of the technique and adding visual depth. The interior is fully glazed for floral use.
Condition is excellent with no chips or cracks observed; only minor kiln marks and light scuffs to the base from display.
The work is accompanied by its original signed wooden tomobako (storage box) bearing seal and inscription, the stamped protective cloth, and a printed artist résumé—ideal for collectors or for display in a tokonoma or contemporary interior.
