Gilt-bronze vase - Patinated bronze - Japan - 20th century

A heavy gilt-bronze vase花瓶 (kabin) with vibrant red murashidô 村紫銅 markings. The vase of baluster form is supported on a waisted foot and surmounted by a short trumpet neck with a wide straight-rimmed mouth. Two sinuous handles rise from the sloping shoulders and rest gracefully against the rim. The surface combines areas of gilt-bronze with striking reddish patination in the murashidô style, producing a warm, vibrant contrast with a cloudy effect. The base is signed ‘Tenmyô Ekiji’ 天明易次. Complete with a signed wooden tomobako 供箱 (storage box) inscribed on the cover “Chûdô kabin” 鋳銅花瓶 (“cast bronze vase”) and on the inside signed ‘Tenmyô Kazuo’ 天明二夫, with an impressed red seal reading the same. Period: Japan – 20th century Dimensions: Height 21.6 cm, Diameter 20.5 cm. Weight: 4,327 g In a good condition with minor wear, light casting irregularities, and areas of oxidized encrustation.
