Hand mirror 柄鏡 (e’kakami) on lacquer mirror stand 鏡立て (kagami’tate) - Copper, Lacquer, Wood - Japan - 19th century (Late Edo period/Meiji period)

A lovely alloy hand mirror 柄鏡 (e’kagami), adorned with an embossed landscape scene and presented on a black lacquered mirror stand 鏡立て (kagami’tate). The reverse of the mirror features an elegant motif of cranes 鶴 (tsuru) and a minogame 蓑亀(symbols of longevity) near pine trees 松 (matsu) by the water’s edge. Along the left side, an signature reads: “杢村因幡守重義” (Mokumura Inaba no Kami Shigeyoshi). The polished mirror side has a soft silver-toned sheen, and the handle is wrapped in rattan. Complete with a black lacquered wooden storage box 鏡箱 (kagami’bako), adorned in gold maki-e 蒔絵 with a crest 紋 (mon) featuring a rare variation of the paulownia blossom motif known as ‘kawari nasukiri’ 変り茄子桐. The foldable mirror stand is executed in a traditional shape, finished in black lacquer and embellished with scrolling pine needle clusters in golden hiramaki-e 平蒔絵 (low-relief lacquer). The hinges of the stands made of gilt metal with scrolling motif, and at the base are secured with blue cords. Period: Japan – 19th century (Late Edo period/Meiji period).
