An outstanding wooden katana’bô’dansu 刀棒箪笥 (sword cabinet with a locking bar) crafted in a single section. Fully restored, cleaned, and waxed Constructed from indigenous kiri 杉 (paulownia) wood, varnished in a dark brown hue with a rich aged patina. The cabinet is designed with two spacious full-width drawers and a smaller mid-size drawer, secured by a vertical lock bar fitted with robust iron hardware. In the lower right corner, a hinged door opens to reveal two additional small drawers, offering versatile storage. The drawers are fitted with sturdy iron kakute-shaped 角手 (square) bail handles, while the sides are equipped with retractable U-shaped “pole-carrying” handles for ease of transport. Period: Japan – Late Edo period (First half 19th century) Dimensions: Height 49.3 cm; Width 108.5 cm; Depth 41.4 cm Drawer interior width: upper two 102.6 cm; lower 78.5 cm The katana’dansu is in a very good restored condition with minimal wear consistent with age and a fine patina. No keys included. Please refer to the photos for a clear condition reference. Traditionally, katana’dansu were used to store sword blades in their long drawers, particularly by sword polishers (togishi 研師). When shipped, we will include a certificate of authenticity.
