Stokke - Peter Opsvik - Lounge chair - Gravity Balans - Beech

Gravity Balans Recliner by Peter Opsvik for Stokke (Norwegian Production) – Rare Early 1980s Example, Dark Grey Fabric Rare and exceptional example of the landmark Gravity Balans reclining lounge chair, designed by Norwegian industrial designer Peter Opsvik in 1983 and originally manufactured by Stokke in Norway (later produced under Varier). This particular piece is a Norwegian-produced variant (not later Polish production) and has been recently professionally re-upholstered in a high-quality dark-grey fabric, giving it a refined and contemporary character while preserving the seminal design. Designer & Historical Significance Peter Opsvik (1939-2024) is a pivotal figure in ergonomic furniture design. His Balans series (including Gravity Balans) re-imagined seating posture, emphasising movement, balance and comfort. Gravity Balans allows multiple sitting and reclining positions — from forward-leaning to fully reclined with legs elevated. The design was first manufactured for Stokke in Norway, marking a high point of Scandinavian ergonomic lounge furniture. Materials & Construction • Laminated beech (or similar hardwood) bent-wood runners and frame; early Norwegian production. • Upholstered in bespoke dark-grey textile (re-upholstered). • Multi-position mechanism: rock forward/back, kneel-lean, recline fully. • Comes with original frame parts (visible stamping “STOKKE” on base) and correct geometry for early production. Dimensions • Height: ~122 cm • Width: ~73 cm • Depth: ~135 cm (in fully reclined position) • Seat height: ~44-45 cm Condition & Restoration This chair has been very well maintained. The original frame is in excellent structural condition; welds/no damage, wood retains integrity, re-upholstery professionally executed. The fabric colour is modern and honours the design. Some minor age-related wear to frame or runners may exist (please refer to photos). Important: The chair will be shipped partly disassembled for safe transport, with all original parts and fittings included (see assembly manual download link below). Shipping & Packaging Due to the large size and complexity of the chair, the piece will be disassembled. Safe packaging, and shipped fully insured worldwide. Local pickup in Norway (Ålesund region) is also available. Provenance • Designed by Peter Opsvik (1983) • Manufactured by Stokke, Norway (original Norwegian production) • Re-upholstered recently; preserved structure and original geometry • Authentic early model (verified stamping/logo) Why this is a collector’s piece • Gravity Balans is one of the most iconic ergonomic chairs of the 20th century, designed by one of Norway’s most influential designers. • Early production Norwegian variant is rarer than later production runs. • Modern re-upholstery in dark-grey fabric enhances market appeal while preserving design integrity.
