De eerste druk van de novelle Het Bestand verscheen als genummerd gebonden blanco boek in een cassette met slechts een sleutel met een chip. Die dient in de computer gestoken te worden waarna de rest zich vanzelf wijst. Het is de zeldzame voorloper van het gebonden boek met het verhaal van de zoektocht van Lillian, een 'oosterse prinses in een betrekkelijk doorsnee meisjeslichaam’.
Onder het toeziend oog van haar mentor Banri Watanuki komt Lillian als receptioniste bij het cyber-securitybedrijf BClever stapje voor stapje dichterbij haar ideaal: leven zonder lichaam, niets meer zijn dan pure intelligentie; het dierenrijk verlaten.
Met een vervolg in Het tweede bestand.

Het boek in de cassette is met de hand genummerd (49) en, net als Het tweede bestand, gesigneerd. De uitgaven verkeren alle drie in nieuwstaat.
