Filigree is a very fine technique used in jewelry making. In this method, gold or silver wires are thinned to needle-like fineness, then twisted and curved to form patterns. The resulting motifs resemble the elegance of lace or crochet. The origins of filigree go back to the 3rd millennium BCE, in Mesopotamia and Egypt.

In the Ottoman period, filigree held an important place in jewelry. Since fine craftsmanship was highly valued, this technique was especially preferred for jewelry and decorative objects. It was commonly seen in rings, earrings, bracelets, necklaces, and belt buckles. Made with fine silver wires, filigree added elegance to women’s ornaments.

In the Ottoman world, the art was often called “telkari” and became highly developed in centers such as Mardin, Midyat, and Trabzon. Filigree was not only an aesthetic decoration but also a symbol of elegance and patience. Today, telkari masters in some Anatolian cities continue to keep this Ottoman tradition alive.
