In September 2001, Barthélémy Toguo stayed at the Drawing Center in New York. In his luggage, he brought small blocks of 40 postcard-sized sheets. He began a series of watercolors in which the head gradually emerges as a recurring form. In his Paris studio, Barthélémy Toguo accumulates stamps of all kinds, with a predilection for animal and floral themes. Naturally, he sticks them onto the cards. All that remains is the written text to complete the meaning of the series.
In 2004, Barthélémy Toguo flies to Belgrade and travels down to the south of Serbia and then to Kosovo. He meets students on campuses, in high schools, and in bars; he asks them to write on these cards their desires, their concerns, their view of the world. He returns five days later with 48 cards from Serbia and as many from Kosovo.
These maps are reproduced in "Head above water", where Serbian and Kosovar gazes intersect toward a shared human longing.
