Description from the seller
Kees van Dongen was a Dutch-French painter, born in Rotterdam in 1877. He moved to Paris in 1897, where he became a leading artist within Fauvism, known for his expressive use of color and sensual portraits of women.
He befriended avant-garde artists like Matisse and Derain and later became a successful society portraitist in Paris and Monaco. His work combines bohemian roughness with glamour and elegance. In 1929, he became a French citizen. Van Dongen died in 1968 in Monaco.
His legacy lives on in museums worldwide, as a colorful and outspoken representative of early modern art.
In this work, Van Dongen shows his characteristic simplicity and strength in line and color. A woman, depicted in soft red tones, stands in front of a mirror, admiring her own reflection. The scene is intimate and sensual, but never vulgar — the artist knows how to create an atmosphere of elegance and self-awareness with just a few expressive chalk lines and subtle accents. The red glow of the lamp enhances the warm tonality of the scene, while the playful contours evoke a sense of spontaneity and movement.
Dimensions with frame: 54 x 44 cm
Dimensions without frame: 16 x 20 cm
Viewing is, of course, possible. Additionally, we have our own in-house framing workshop, which is celebrating its 85th anniversary. Furthermore, we collaborate with restorers from the professional organization: 'Restauratoren Nederland'. If you wish to make use of this service, we would of course be happy to hear from you.
