In collaboration of antiquarian photo book seller Lodewijk van Paddenburgh Bert Teunissen photographed the interiors of book collectors in Leiden. One of them was renowned writer Rudy van Kousbroek who also wrote the essay for the book that was titled ‘Paleizen van het geheugen’ which means ‘Palaces of the memory’.

In it, Bert Teunissen portrays seven rooms of men who own many books. Rudy Kousbroek wrote an entertaining introduction to these images, in which he compares searching for books in such chaos to geology. Excavating the layers reveals all sorts of unexpected artifacts (such as sunscreen and pipe tobacco), which reveal something about the period in which the item was read or purchased. The title is derived from the passage in Augustine's Confessions, in which he describes what happens in his mind when he tries to remember something and enters the "fields and spacious buildings of memory, where the treasure chambers are located with the countless images of all kinds of perceived things brought there." According to Rudy Kousbroek, the same desired and unwanted associations and ahaerlebnissen (awe-inspiring experiences) arise when searching for a book in a disorderly pile. The interiors in Teunissen's photographs share one thing in common: the only access lies within the owner's memory. The seven original Giclée prints (12x26cm), produced by Souverein bv in Weesp, depict seven rooms of book lovers. They are voyeuristic images, generally of seemingly disorderly book rooms, which makes the image of the orderly room with calculators lined up on the desk even more fascinating.
