Powerful ancestor figure from the Babembe people of DR Congo. Beautifull scarifications on the belly and the figure is carrying a child on her shoulders.
The function of Bembe art is said to be primarily concerned with contacting ancestors and seeking their assistance, which accords in general terms with other accounts testifying to use of figures to endow hunters and warriors with good fortune before combat or hunting expeditions.
Good condition with clear traces of wear and tear. The right arm is restored in the past.
