Byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) - Goldish silver leaf, Wood, Silk, Paper - Japan - Late Meiji period (early 20th century)
An intriguing tall six-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) featuring a painting depicting scenes from The Tale of Genji 源氏物語 (Genji Monogatari).
The composition portrays elegantly dressed aristocrats and their sons engaged in leisurely pastimes around the Rokujô estate: strolling along the waterside, admiring the autumn foliage 紅葉 (momiji), or seated peacefully beneath a canopy of trees. Shimmering golden-silver clouds drift across the scene, while distant mountain peaks emerge softly along the horizon.
Executed in multi-coloured pigments on paper with golden-silver leaf highlights, the work is bordered by two silk bands: a slender green inner border and a broader black outer border adorned with a delicate floral motif. The panels are set within a black lacquered wooden frame fitted with copper protective hardware.
Period: Japan – Late Meiji period (early 20th century).
Dimensions:
Total width 368.6 cm (2 × 62.7 cm, 4 × 60.8 cm); Height 173 cm.
In very good restored condition, with traces of wear consistent with age on both sides. Restoration to the silver leaf on the second panel from the right; reverse with areas of repapering. Please refer to the photos for a clear condition reference.
This folding screen is ideal for mounting flat on a wall and presenting as a single work of art.
When shipped, we will include a certificate of authenticity.
