A late nineteenth century majolica jug from Westerwald with a bold relief and central eagle, polychrome glazed and bearing Merkelbach & Wick branding.
Description from the seller
Jug (Krug 1890), Germany, end of the 19th century.
Made of majolica, with a solid form typical of ceramic works from the Westerwald region. The body is richly decorated with deep, precise relief. The ornamentation includes elaborate plant motifs, stylized volutes, and a centrally placed depiction of an eagle, characteristic of German symbolism at the end of the 19th century. The entire piece is additionally polychromed, with a delicately shaded surface emphasizing the three-dimensionality of the decoration.
Relief decorations demonstrate a high quality of modeling, and the ornamental composition reflects the craftsmanship of the artisans working for the manufactory. The rim of the jug and the ornamental parts are adorned with intricate details, typical of the Secession-historizing style of that period.
Height: 36 cm.
At the bottom, there is a clear, embossed signature of Merkelbach & Wick, one of the prestigious German producers of stoneware and majolica operating in Höhr-Grenzhausen. The manufactory was known for producing high-quality steins, mugs, and jugs, which were valued both for their technical quality and decorative appeal.
The item is a representative example of German artistic craftsmanship from the late 19th century, combining traditional techniques with rich historical ornamentation. Ideal as a collector's item, it bears witness to the ceramic craftsmanship of the Westerwald region.
