Offered here is an original contemporary transcription after Jusepe de Ribera, reimagined with a bold modern sensibility while honouring the dramatic intensity of the 16th-century Spanish Baroque master. This work transforms Ribera’s deeply human realism into a fresh, modern vision suitable for any interior that seeks a dialogue between classical depth and contemporary character.
Expertly executed in oil on a carefully prepared MDF panel (50 × 40 cm), the artist first sealed the back using traditional hide glue to protect the panel from moisture—an old-world method still used by conservators to ensure long-term stability. The painting itself is created with the disciplined techniques of 19th-century academic painters, combined with a modern, expressive colour palette that brings new life and emotional immediacy to the classical subject.
The work shows a finely modelled male figure, rendered with striking chiaroscuro, set against a soft atmospheric background. A skull placed beside him echoes Ribera’s themes of mortality, introspection, and spiritual tension, yet the overall treatment feels unmistakably contemporary. This combination of historic reference and modern sensibility makes the piece both timeless and unique.

About the Artist
Ardic Agus (b. 1992) is a contemporary figurative painter trained in Florence, Italy, and at the Barcelona Academy of Art. He currently works full-time in Florence, drawing on classical foundations to develop a modern expressive language. This painting has been exhibited in Europe and remained in the artist’s private collection until now, making this a rare opportunity to acquire a personal and significant work from his studio.
