Selection of four Hokusai woodblock prints, reprint by Takamizawa - Paper - Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) - Japan - 20th century

In the mid-1950s, the renowned Takamizawa Publisher released a reprint series of 49 of Hokusai prints. The series focused on Hokusai’s charming, atypical designs that were less commonly seen. Printed with the attention to detail and exquisite quality of the Takamizawa Publisher, this rare reprint series is a collector’s delight. (1) Two beauties under mosquito net - Attractive Hokusai design of two beauties preparing for bed, one reaching out from beneath the mosquito netting towards a tobacco set. The other woman holds a pillow on her knees as she crouches near a lantern, a folding screen behind her. A partially unrolled letter and a round fan rest on the floor nearby. A charming scene from everyday life. (2) Plovers on the Sumida River and Farms at Hashiba - Two beauties make their way between buildings along the busy waterfront, a servant behind. Workers stack cargo at right, one man tossing bundles of firewood up to another. A lively winter scene along the Sumida River with snow covering the rooftops. (3) Sumidagawa River - Attractive scene of two beauties standing along a dock along the Sumida River, waving at a departing ferry. The wind flutters the flowing sleeves of one woman's kimono. An elegant design, nicely colored. (4) Mother with baby - A lovely Hokusai depiction of a mother cuddling her baby boy. The child clambers up onto her as she reclines on the floor, wearing a kimono patterned with undulating waves in pink and blue. Soft color and fine detail in this charming print.
