Bodywork / Lacquer Work
The body of this 1971 Mercedes-Benz 280 SE is in good condition and provides a solid basis for preservation or light cosmetic improvement. The paintwork is well-maintained and shows minor signs of use appropriate for the vehicle's age, such as small superficial scratches or light corrosion, but no major damage as far as known. The car has mostly been stored indoors, which is clearly visible in the overall condition of the sheet metal and the gloss of the paint. Currently, no rust spots or corroded parts have been observed, but a closer inspection of the sills, wheel arches, and underside is always recommended for a classic of this age. The chrome work is in very good condition: bumpers, trim strips, and mirrors are shiny and show hardly any pitting or deterioration. All rubbers around doors, windows, and the tailgate appear complete and function properly, although aging due to the passage of time may be present. As far as known, there has been no welding on the body, and the car presents itself as an honest, well-preserved classic.
TECHNICAL
Technically, the Mercedes is in good basic condition, although the car has been stationary for a long time and therefore requires attention before it can be actively driven again. The engine runs well and is known for its durability; there are no indications of major mechanical problems, but a full inspection is recommended. Because the car has been stationary indoors for a long time, the battery is currently dead, and no recent maintenance has been performed. The brakes function during a short move but probably need to be checked for dry cracks, sticking brake calipers, or old brake fluid. The tires may have dry spots from standing still and should be visually inspected. The transmission is expected to shift well, but a check of the oil and seals is also advisable. There are no known oil leaks, but with a classic car, slight sealing seepage cannot be ruled out. Overall, the car is expected to pass the APK inspection, but due to the period of inactivity, it needs a technical check before it is ready for use.
Interior
The interior of the car is completely original and forms an important part of the charm of this vehicle. The seats, upholstery, and panels show signs of use but are intact and appropriate for the age of the classic Mercedes. The materials appear well-maintained, with slight wear in areas such as the driver's seat, door sills, and steering wheel. The headliner is present and looks good, with no sagging parts known. All controls are fully original, including switches, gauges, and chrome details. Electrical components such as windows and any accessories should be checked, as the car has not been used for some time; operational functionality has not been recently tested. The dashboard and wood inlay are complete and present a neat appearance. This interior has a beautiful original look and provides a strong basis for use, preservation, or light restoration.

Catawiki always aims to offer you the best possible buying experience. Our experts virtually review and select every vehicle in line with our submission guidelines and we require our sellers to provide the most accurate description of the vehicle. However, providing a fully detailed analysis of the vehicle is extremely difficult, and close to impossible. To guide you, we ask our sellers to provide information about the vehicle’s condition. Please consider that most vehicles for sale are classic vehicles and they often already have a whole life behind them, meaning that even a condition 1 or 2 vehicle might need maintenance to be ready for the road. It is advised to carefully read our submission guidelines that further describe details about the condition grades and types to manage your expectations. Cars are sold “as is”, meaning as described and in the condition they are in at the time of the sale and without any representation, warranty or assumption of liability of any kind as to the condition by Catawiki or by the seller. The condition of this item is the opinion of the seller and may differ from yours, your local garage, or the dealer’s opinion. This does not automatically mean the car does not conform to its description. Before bidding, please check your local legislation regarding vehicle registration. Neither the seller nor Catawiki is responsible for the registration of the vehicle in your country and will not accept a cancellation for your failure to register the vehicle. We also recommend that, if possible, you arrange a viewing with the seller before placing a bid.
