De traditie van de Ruhla uurwerkproductie gaat terug tot 1890, het jaar waarin de eerste uurwerken werden gebouwd door Gebroeders Thiele - Uhren und Maschienfabrik - Ruhla

De Gardé schaakklokken waren voor het eerst bij de Schaakolympiade in Leipzig in 1960 en sindsdien ook de officiële wedstrijdklok bij de wereldkampioenschappen, o.a. Karpov – Kasparov tot de PCA-tweekamp tussen Kasparov en Short in 1993 in Londen - Hierna deed de digitale klok zijn intrede op het WK-podium.
