【Product details】

This is a Showa period Noh mask representing Kantan Otoko, carved by hand from wood and finished with traditional gofun, a white pigment made from finely crushed oyster shell. Kantan Otoko depicts the face of a young man.

The mask is used for the role of Lu Sheng, the protagonist of the Noh play Kantan, as well as for young male deities. The play Kantan is based on the classical Chinese tale of “a dream while rice cooks,” exploring the contrast between illusion and reality. The expression of the mask reflects this poetic theme, combining the refined elegance of a noble youth with a sense of fresh vitality.

Age-related blemishes are visible, including abrasions, scratches, small losses and cracking of the surface coating in several areas, general wear and light staining. The tie cord is missing.
