"Goat Under a Plum Tree" (梅の下の山羊) Ukiyo-e - Kikō Hokkei (喜皐北渓,1780-1850) - Japan (No reserve price)

Work Title: "Goat Under a Plum Tree" (梅の下の山羊) Ukiyo-e Artist: Kikō Hokkei (喜皐北渓,1780-1850) Technique: Woodblock print Artist's Signature: Present on the print Paper Size: 21.5 × 18.2 cm (8.46 × 7.17 in) Packaging Size: 49 × 33.3 cm (19.29 × 13.11 in) Paper Material: Washi (和紙) Publisher: Adachi Woodblock Print Institute (足立木刻版画研究所) This charming ukiyo-e woodblock print was created by Kikō Hokkei (喜皐北渓), a renowned ukiyo-e artist of the Edo period in Japan, in the early 19th century (circa 1815). In the 1980s, this work was reissued using traditional woodblock printing techniques by the Adachi Woodblock Print Institute (足立木刻版画研究所). The composition centers on a white goat (山羊): its fluffy fur is rendered with delicate lines, while its horns and hooves are accented in pale blue. To the right stands a gnarled old plum tree (梅の木) with blooming blossoms—a classic motif in Japanese traditional aesthetics symbolizing "spring" (春) and "beauty of solitude" (孤寂の美). The print bears the publisher's embossed stamp on the paper, accompanied by the original complete packaging and explanatory notes in both Japanese and English. Due to age, the washi paper shows slight oxidation and yellowing, but the overall condition remains good. Artist's Note Kikō Hokkei (喜皐北渓) was a disciple of Katsushika Hokusai (葛飾北斎). He left only a small number of independent print works, focusing primarily on illustrations—including the landscape series Shokoku Meisho (諸国名所,"Famous Places in Various Provinces"), with approximately 15 surviving pieces. While his works clearly reflect Hokusai's influence, they explore themes untouched by his master and boast exquisite details that appeal to niche aesthetic audiences. - The picture is part of the description. The color of the item may be slightly different from the picture (due to camera and screen settings). - The successful bidder will be responsible for any customs duties and taxes (if applicable). - This item will be mailed by the postal service of Taiwan in the form of airmail with insurance attached.
