Refined three-tired wooden Jubako重箱 designed with vivid gold pine needles by Chinkin沈金 technique by excellent workmanship. Chinkin沈金 is a decorative technique for lacquerware. A pattern is carved into the lacquer surface with a blade, and gold leaf or powder is pressed into the marks. Aizu lacquerware is a traditional craft handed down in the Aizu region of Fukushima Prefecture. It is also known as Aizu-nuri (lacquerware). It has been designated a traditional craft by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry and a nationally designated traditional craft. Historically, it flourished earlier than Tsugaru lacquerware and Wajima lacquerware. It employs a wide variety of techniques, including mother-of-pearl inlay, lacquer painting, dry lacquer, maki-e (gold-spangled maki-e), and flower lacquering. Woods used include horse chestnut, maple, zelkova, red zelkova, magnolia, and cherry.
