One-of-a-Kind Smiling Oni – Handmade Figurine from Ryusen Kiln (Ushitakiyama-yaki)
■ Description
This is a unique, one-of-a-kind smiling Oni figurine created by Ryusen Kiln (Ushitakiyama-yaki) in Japan.
Unlike traditional fierce Oni figures, this piece features a warm, friendly smile designed to bring humor and a gentle presence into any space.
Made of unglazed, bisque-fired clay, the figure displays the natural texture of the earth, expressive hand-shaped contours, and the warmth of the artisan’s fingerprints.
No identical piece exists—this figurine is truly the only one of its kind in the world.
Due to the nature of unglazed clay, placing the figurine outdoors—especially where it is exposed to rain—may allow a soft layer of moss to form over time.
This natural aging process adds depth, character, and a traditional charm unique to earthenware works.
However, bisque clay is extremely fragile.
Although we will pack the item with great care, it is more delicate than standard ceramics, and the risk of damage during transport is higher.
We kindly ask for your understanding when considering your purchase.
The item’s condition is exactly as shown in the photos.
Please enjoy the warmth, individuality, and folk-art charm that only a fully hand-crafted piece can offer.
■ Story
Ryusen Kiln (Ushitakiyama-yaki) is a traditional folk pottery studio that creates warm and rustic works inspired by the local culture and natural surroundings.
The artisan, Shosuke Miyake, hand-shapes each piece without using molds, giving every work a unique expression and a sense of life.
Their philosophy is rooted in the belief that
“beauty deepens as the piece becomes part of someone’s daily life.”
This spirit is reflected in the natural clay texture, the hand-formed shapes, and the traces of craftsmanship left in every piece.
This smiling Oni was created not as a fearsome creature, but as a
“cheerful guardian that brightens the room and softens the heart.”
It embodies the playful, welcoming character that defines Ryusen Kiln’s folk-art style.
