AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Beautiful original engraving by Jacques Callot, part of 'Le Combat a la Barriere' by Henry Humbert, a series of 10 etchings created to celebrate the event that took place on February 14, 1627, in honor of the Duchessa di Chevreuse. The account of the event was published by Henry Humbert, and Callot's prints were used to illustrate the work.
A specimen trimmed to the framing, on heavy watermark paper, in good condition, with a few small tears repaired at the edges and, visible in transmitted light, some abrasions (see photo).
Title at the top right, bottom left 'Jac. Callot in. et Fe. Nancy'; on the back, a handwritten note with the date 1816.
Depicted is the entrance of Carlo IV, Duke of Lorraine: a procession beginning at the bottom right, with musicians on a cart pulled by six female figures, followed by a cart representing Vulcano in his cave, pulled by four male figures; at the top left, two men with arms ending in branches drag a cart shaped like a formal garden; the procession is closed by the triumphant Duke of Lorraine standing on his cart, pulled by horses with long manes.
Lieure, 582; Meaune, 499.
