Description from the seller
Jan Commandeur (1954–2024) was a Dutch artist who grew up in North Holland and was strongly influenced by nature and landscape. He studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie and Ateliers ’63 and received important art awards early in his career. Commandeur mainly created abstract work: memory images in which color, light, movement, and silence play a central role. In addition to paintings, he also worked with collage and photography. His work was exhibited in museums such as the Stedelijk Museum and is part of various collections. Commandeur passed away in April 2024, but his poetic and nature-inspired oeuvre continues to live on.
This lively and colorful work showcases Commandeur's characteristic abstract approach to the landscape. With expressive brushstrokes and bright colors—such as oranges, greens, and blues—he suggests a dynamic natural environment full of movement and energy. The forms loosely refer to trees, water, and foliage but remain sufficiently abstract to leave room for the viewer's imagination. The color contrasts and pushed lines contribute to a sense of rhythm and vitality, giving the work an almost musical appearance. It is a typical example of Commandeur's ability to transform memory, natural experience, and emotion into a powerful, abstract visual language.
There is no glass in front of this work.
