Pieter Bruegel the Elder (Breugel or Breda, between 1525 and 1530 – Brussels, September 9, 1569) was an artist. He was the father of Pieter Brueghel the Younger and Jan Brueghel the Elder. He himself signed and drew his works from 1559 until his death as Bruegel (without the 'h'), but his sons signed with Brueghel, which is sometimes also used for him. He is sometimes referred to in literature as the 'Farmer Bruegel' because several paintings in his oeuvre depict scenes from peasant life.
