HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE
"The Vegetable" is F. Scott Fitzgerald's only published play and one of his scarcest works. Only 7,650 copies were printed in the first edition. The play satirizes American politics and the myth of upward mobility during the Jazz Age. Though unsuccessful as a stage production, it remains an important collectible for Fitzgerald completists and scholars of American literature.
The play premiered in November 1923 in Atlantic City but closed before reaching Broadway. Despite its theatrical failure, the published work captures Fitzgerald's satirical wit during his most productive period.
