Leo Setz

The artist Willem Alexander Knip is considered one of the greatest painters of the Laren School. He was born in Amsterdam on January 31st 1883 and lived and worked in Laren (N.H.) and Blaricum for most of his life.

Willem Knip studied to become a decoration painter at the Quelliniusschool in Amsterdam and worked in the studio of Chris Lebeau for some time. He was also a student at the Royal Academy in Amsterdam. To break free from decorative influences he settled in the Gooi area around 1900, where he developed his own balanced impressionist style. 

After 1921, Knip expanded his working area to other countries and lived and worked in many places in France, Italy (Venice and Florence) and Spain. He painted, water-coloured and drew (pastel) landscapes, harbour and city views. 

After the war, he became more and more successful with especially his landscapes and village scenes, which he quickly sold in both the Netherlands and abroad. This way, he was soon able to afford a larger house with studio in Blaricum at the Torenlaan 57. He called this house ‘De Knip’.

Willem Knip died on October 28th 1967 in Blaricum.

Frame: framed in a silver/gold-coloured frame.
Signed: bottom right.
Edition: Original.
