Description
This is a fine example of traditional Japanese lacquerware, a letter box (Bunko or Fumibako) crafted by the renowned Daimaru Lacquer Studio in Wajima, Ishikawa Prefecture.

Wajima-nuri is regarded as one of Japan’s most prestigious lacquer traditions, highly valued for its exceptional durability and refined, lustrous finish.

The lid is decorated in the elegant Musashino-bori style, a sophisticated form of Chinkin (gold-inlay engraving). This technique involves delicately incising fine lines into the lacquer surface to depict autumn grasses—evoking the poetic scenery of the Musashino plains—and then filling them with gold powder. The striking contrast between the deep, mirror-like black lacquer and the shimmering gold creates a serene and timeless composition.

Both functional and decorative, this piece is ideal for storing documents, letters, or stationery, while also serving as a refined interior accent.

The item comes complete with its original wooden storage box (tomobako) and an original descriptive leaflet from the studio.

Condition
The lacquerware is in excellent vintage condition, retaining a beautiful glossy finish. There are only minor signs of use consistent with age. The gold inlay remains vivid and well-preserved.

The original wooden box shows natural aging and slight discoloration, which is typical for authentic vintage items.
