Caroline Bokobza

In Sospiri Mediterranei tra Petali e Abissi, Antonio Sciacca composes a still life that feels both terrestrial and marine, suspended between garden and seabed. A dark earthenware vase holds an arrangement of pink peonies at various stages of bloom. Their petals unfurl in soft, luminous spirals, while several stems bend outward, suggesting a gentle surrender to gravity. The flowers seem to breathe, as though exhaling the “Mediterranean sighs” evoked in the title.

To the left, a vivid branch of red coral rests upon a small base. This detail subtly shifts the painting’s atmosphere. Coral, born from the depths, introduces the presence of the abyss. Its branching form mirrors the organic rhythm of the peony stems, creating a dialogue between sea and land, depth and surface, permanence and fragility.

The composition is grounded by a rich red drapery cascading over a wooden ledge. The fabric’s folds are rendered with careful attention to light, adding a quiet theatricality. As in much of Sciacca’s work, the stage-like setting elevates simple objects into carriers of symbolic meaning. The peonies, often associated with beauty and ephemeral abundance, contrast with coral’s ancient, mineral endurance. One breathes and withers; the other hardens and persists.

Light caresses the ceramic vase, revealing its subtle texture and reflective surface, while the background remains restrained and shadowed. The overall effect is contemplative rather than dramatic. The painting invites the viewer to sense the invisible currents that connect bloom and abyss, petal and reef, fragility and time.
