Gothic statue in oak depicting a male figure holding a book, probably an apostle or disciple of Jezus. Probably this statue is depicting the apostle Saint Paul. In his left hand his attribute is missing. (could have been a sword; the sign of his martyrship - because St.Paul was beheaded) The way the hair and beard of the apostle is made matches with the normal gothic depiction of Saint Paul. This statue is probably made by a skilled craftsman from the Lower Rhine region aroud the year 1500. It has a similarity with the statues in the altars in the Nicolauskirche in Kalkar (D) It is possible that the statue was polychromed originally but there are also pieces known without decoration. The statue might have been one of the figurines in a group of apostles in the upper part of an altar in a church. The fingers and thumb of the right hand of the apostle are from later date.
