[Limited Edition, Hand-Signed] Gashu Fukami “Cat and Snow” Woodblock Print | Dreamlike Blue Scene with Charming Cat

Item Description
This charming woodblock print titled “Cat and Snow” (猫と雪) is an original work by Japanese artist Gashu Fukami (深水賀秀). The composition features a stylized black cat standing against a serene blue background, gently scattered with white snowflakes. The artist’s signature use of bold outlines and simplified, almost whimsical form gives the cat a lively yet calm and contemplative presence.

Fukami’s work is celebrated for blending traditional Japanese woodblock techniques with a modern, lyrical sensibility. The layered colors and textured surfaces create depth while maintaining the warmth characteristic of hand-pulled prints. The playful yet refined depiction of the cat evokes a sense of quiet joy and nostalgia, making this piece both visually engaging and emotionally soothing.

This piece is hand-signed and part of a limited edition, making it a valuable collectible for admirers of contemporary Japanese printmaking. As noted in the artist’s background, Fukami’s works often reflect everyday subjects—such as animals—imbued with poetic charm and a gentle worldview .

Artist Profile
Gashu Fukami (深水賀秀) is a contemporary Japanese woodblock print artist born in Kumamoto Prefecture in 1953. He studied in Kyoto and was influenced by notable printmakers such as Umetaro Azechi and Takeji Asano. Fukami later expanded his artistic perspective through study in Boston, integrating Western design elements into traditional Japanese printmaking.

His works are characterized by strong black contour lines, layered color techniques, and a warm, poetic atmosphere. Frequently depicting animals, landscapes, and everyday scenes, Fukami’s art captures a harmonious balance between simplicity and emotional depth, making his prints widely appreciated in both Japan and international markets.
