Beschrijving van de verkoper

Bronze standing Buddha Thailand, Ayutthaya Period 17th century.
Prasat Thong Style.

Fragmentary condition (see pictures)

King Prasat Thong reigned from 1629 -1656, he was the first king of the Prasat Thong dynasty, the 4th dynasty of the Ayutthaya Kingdom.

Standing in the Abhayamudra gesture. Thai sculpture of standing Buddha images is mostly depicted with regal stability, facing fully forward, the body neither twisting or bending. In the early Ayutthaya style also called U Thong the sinuous linear curves, loops and dry ridges of the Sukhothai patterns are suppressed, and genuine modeling appears. Around the middle of the 15th century the U Thong style began to merge into the Ordinary Ayutthaya or National Style. Limbs and bodies are given a massive cylindrical strenght, and a curtain rigid appearance eliminates elegance and bronzes have a more human anatomy with strong forms, stylized and simplified and far less supernatural then Sukhothai images, although Middle Ayutthaya images were similar to Sukhothai images and poses. In Southeast Asia, artistic develpment was never a part but distribute an authentic canon of the Buddha icons was the prime artistic consern.
