The base material is shakudo, a high-quality copper and gold alloy highly prized in Japanese sword fittings. Through the traditional niiro patination process, it develops a deep, rich black surface with subtle purplish tones, creating an elegant and refined appearance. The surface is completely covered in an exceptionally fine nanako ground, a technique in which countless tiny, evenly spaced dots are punched into the metal using a specialised chisel. This painstaking method produces a texture reminiscent of fish roe and demonstrates a high level of craftsmanship. The precision required for such work means only highly skilled artisans could achieve such uniformity. Against this dark surface, brass inlay is used to depict a flowing vine with young pumpkins. The design is rendered with a subtle sense of movement and depth. In Japanese symbolism, trailing vines represent longevity and continuity, while gourds and pumpkins, containing many seeds, symbolise prosperity, fertility, and abundance. Together, they form an auspicious motif associated with growth and enduring fortune. The set is accompanied by a wooden box from the late 20th century. The set remains in good to very good antique condition. The characteristic deep tone of the shakudo and the fine nanako texture are well preserved.
