Le Singe et le Léopard / The Monkey and the Leopard, from the celebrated series Le Bestiaire de La Fontaine, created in 1974 and published by Mouret / Les Éditions des Maîtres Contemporains. This work belongs to the suite of 12 engravings inspired by the fables of Jean de La Fontaine, where Dalí combines literary fantasy, surrealist imagination and his unmistakable graphic line. The work is executed as an etching with drypoint and pochoir printed in colours on Auvergne paper. It is signed in pencil by Salvador Dalí and numbered in Roman numerals LX/CXX. The plate shows Dalí’s characteristic combination of delicate drawing, dreamlike figures, animal symbolism and refined use of colour. The composition includes the typical surrealist tension between classical narrative, humour, myth and metamorphosis, placing it firmly within Dalí’s mature graphic production of the 1970s. This engraving is referenced in the catalogues raisonnés of Dalí’s graphic work: Field catalogue raisonné #74-1 H and Michler & Löpsinger catalogue raisonné #661 Condition: Excellent overall condition. The colours are vivid and fresh, and the Auvergne paper is in good condition. There is a small cut of approximately 2 cm in the lower part of the sheet, visible on close inspection. Otherwise the paper presents well, with strong impression, clean margins and attractive colours.
