Paul Wullems

Elegant Chinese folding fan, probably made in Canton / Guangzhou for the European export market. The fan can be dated, with caution, to the mid to late 19th century, around 1850–1880, during the Qing Dynasty.

The leaf is finely hand-painted with an Oriental garden scene featuring figures in traditional clothing, rocks, bamboo, pine branches, birds and flowering plants. The composition shows several male figures in conversation and movement, painted in delicate colours: blue, red, purple, green and ochre tones.

The decoration is typical of Chinese export fans produced in the 19th century for Western collectors and travellers.

The sticks are richly decorated and pierced with floral, vegetal and ornamental motifs. The material appears to be bone. The outer guard sticks are more solid and decorated in relief.

A highly decorative and collectible object, suitable for collectors of Asian art, antique fans and Chinese export objects.

China, Qing Dynasty, circa 1850–1880

Hand-painted paper, probably gouache.
Pierced in bone.

Good overall condition considering its age, with visible signs of wear and age.
There are stains, yellowing, folds, abrasions, small losses and fragile areas along the upper edge of the leaf. Some pierced parts of the sticks show losses, breaks or possible old repairs. The paper has oxidisation, wear and small damages consistent with age and use.

Please look carefully at the photographs, as they are an integral part of the description.
Fan width when open: 46 cm
Fan height: 28 cm
Frame dimensions: 73 × 48 cm

The fan is presented in a later decorative frame measuring 73 × 48 cm. The frame is included as a complimentary gift from the seller; the lot is sold as the antique fan itself.
