Kumi Sugai (1919-1996) - Soleil Bleu (Blue Sun)

Title Kumi Sugai (1919–1996) – “Soleil Bleu” (Blue Sun) – Original Screenprint – Hand-Signed & Dated 1969 – Sheet Only ⸻ Description This is an authentic original screenprint by the internationally acclaimed Japanese abstract artist Kumi Sugai (1919–1996). Created in 1969 and titled “Soleil Bleu” (Blue Sun), this work is an outstanding example of Sugai’s iconic geometric abstraction from his most celebrated creative period. After moving from Kobe to Paris in 1952, Sugai became one of the leading figures of the post-war École de Paris and the international avant-garde. During the 1960s, he developed his signature visual language of bold geometric forms, vivid primary colours, and precise graphic compositions inspired by road signs, urban design, and modern architecture. His works are held in major museum collections, including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York, the Centre Pompidou, Paris, and the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo. “Soleil Bleu” presents a powerful composition dominated by a deep blue arch, framed by vivid red semicircular motifs and anchored by rhythmic black-and-white diagonal stripes. The balance between colour, geometry, and movement perfectly reflects Sugai’s mature style, making this period especially sought after by collectors of post-war Japanese and European abstract art. The print is hand-signed “SUGAÏ” in pencil and dated “69”, confirming its authenticity. Dimensions * Sheet: approx. 58.0 × 58.5 cm * Image: approx. 55.5 × 56.5 cm Condition This original print is offered in vintage condition with visible signs of age. Please note the presence of foxing, wrinkles, light creases, and overall age-related toning. The reverse shows tape residue and traces of previous mounting or framing.
