Exceptional Large and Heavy Antique Hand-Engraved Glass Serving Tray – Continental Europe, c. 1890–1900

A particularly impressive and highly decorative antique serving tray, distinguished by its exceptionally elaborate engraved glass panel, substantial ebonised wooden frame, ornate brass carrying handles and notably large format.

Measuring approximately 53 × 35 × 4 cm, this is a generously proportioned tray with a commanding presence. The large surface provides an unusually extensive canvas for the intricate glass engraving, making the decoration particularly striking when viewed as a whole. Its considerable size is an important additional quality and makes the piece suitable not only as a functional serving tray but also as an impressive decorative display object.

The rectangular glass panel is almost completely covered with an intricate and highly symmetrical engraved composition. The decoration combines sweeping fan-shaped motifs, stylised foliage, floral rosettes, scrolling elements and repeated geometric ornament, surrounded by a finely executed ornamental border. The density and precision of the engraving give the glass remarkable depth and visual movement, especially when viewed under changing light.

The central composition has a strongly historicist character, combining Neo-Rococo and late 19th-century decorative vocabulary with the refined ornamental taste associated with the Belle Époque. The exceptionally elaborate engraving is the principal feature of this piece and gives it considerably more decorative presence than ordinary antique serving trays.

The glass is mounted in a substantial, dark ebonised wooden frame. At the two short ends are decorative brass carrying handles with finely worked ornamental details. The handles, dark frame and engraved glass form a particularly harmonious combination and give the tray an elegant and somewhat architectural appearance.

The construction visible from the reverse is consistent with an old hand-assembled piece: the engraved glass is secured within the wooden framework and the wooden backing and traditional fastenings remain present. The overall construction has the character of an object made as a quality decorative furnishing and serving piece rather than a later mass-produced tray.

The tray remains in very attractive antique condition. The glass shows minor age-related surface marks and small imperfections consistent with its age, while there are no major cracks or obvious structural breaks. The wooden frame and brass handles retain an appealing aged patina which contributes to its authentic antique character.

Overall, this is an unusually large, richly decorated and visually impressive example of antique engraved glasswork. Its combination of scale, extensive hand-engraved decoration, ebonised wood and ornamental brass hardware makes it an especially attractive object for collectors of antique glass, decorative arts and historic European interiors.
