Oude Egypte, late periode Blauwe faience Amulet of Nut als een zeug

A fine Egyptian small dark blue faience amulet depicting the goddess Nut as a sow. The amulet is rendering the animal with its snout lowered to the ground, its body slightly stooped. Two small eyes and ears are visible on the head. Various fine incisions mark hair on the body and there is a well rendered curly tail at the back. The composition sits on a rectangular base. A small suspension loop sits at the top of the back of the sow for attachment. Earthy encrustation and wear to the surface. It is thought that the goddess Nut was depicted as a sow on account of her role in the birth and death of the sun. Giving birth to both the sun and the stars during the day and night respectively, she consumes them up as they disappear from the heavens at dusk and dawn. This consumption of her offspring was likened to the female pig’s habit of consuming her own offspring. Measurements: W 1.3cm x H 1.3cm Provenance: Ex. early 20th century U.K collection N.B. Delivery may be longer due to the busier period and we do not guarantee delivery before Christmas. Items paid for after the 19th December will be shipped after the New Year (week commencing on the 5th January 2026). **There will be an additional fee incurred for returned shipments due to buyer’s non-response to customs enquiries and/or unsuccessful delivery attempts.**
