Amulet of the goddess Selkis Ancient Egypt, Late Period, 664 - 332 B.C. MATERIAL: Lapis lazuli. DIMENSIONS: 2 cm height. PROVENANCE: - Art market, Barcelona. - Private collection, J. M., Barcelona. Formed at the beginning of the 1960s - 1970s. - Inherited by his wife C. C., Barcelona. CONDITION: Good condition. Intact. DESCRIPTION: Scorpion goddess, usually depicted as a woman with a scorpion on her head. Her name is an abbreviation of the Egyptian 'serket hetyt', 'she who makes the throat breathe', which clearly states the protective character of the goddess. Anyone stung by a scorpion can experience breathing difficulties and Selkis' task was thus to prevent stings. In addition, Selkis was also responsible for protecting the sarcophagus and the canopic chest, together with the goddesses Isis, Nephthys and Neith. The particular canopic jar entrusted to her was the one associated with the god Qebehsenuf.
