Description from the seller
For sale: Antique monetary pocket balance scale (trébuchet monétaire) – France – 18th/19th century.
Beautiful and authentic antique monetary balance scale, also known as trébuchet monétaire de poche, used for weighing gold and silver coins. This type of precision scale was used in Europe by merchants, bankers and travelers to check the authenticity and weight of coins.
The balance scale is housed in a wooden box with an interior:
• two copper scales
• a set of free weights
• a printed reference table on the inside of the lid
The table is in French and lists various coins (including Louis d’or, ecus, ducats, pistoles), which points to a French origin. Such tables were intended to compare the correct weight of coins by region.
state
• Original and complete specimen (some mg weights may be missing).
• Clear signs of use and wear appropriate for the age
• Paper and printing on the lid are only partially legible.
• Sturdy wooden box, with a nice patina
Details
• Collectible object
• Interesting for enthusiasts of numismatics, antique measuring instruments, and historical trade
• Decorative and historically relevant
This type of small balances was practical tool, not luxury objects, and was therefore usually unsigned. Production often took place by small workshops or specialized instrument makers who worked for trading houses.
The focus was on functionality and accuracy, not on attribution.
