Description from the seller
This oil painting by Henri Hess depicts a nude, reclining woman. He chooses predominantly purple and red tones, which set the mood of the piece. The woman herself is portrayed by leaving out a lot of color, so that she emerges from the surroundings in a subtle yet powerful way.
At a young age, Henri Hess's drawing talent (born 1950, Eindhoven) was evident. Although he initially attended the L.T.S., he ultimately chose his true passion: art. From 1967, he studied at the Eindhoven Free Academy, where he was taught by, among others, Peter ’t Hoen and Jan Kuhr. Through his contacts with painters Frans Manders and Louis Ector, he further developed into a talented and versatile artist.
The style of Henri Hess is direct, uncomplicated, and colorful. His love for painting pours from the canvas. With brush and palette knife he paints in a spontaneous and powerful manner a variety of subjects: French landscapes, village scenes, still lifes, animals, portraits, harbor views (such as in Honfleur), water scenes, beach scenes, Brabant lakes and flowers. His work is characterized by a bold, impasto touch and a striking sense of atmosphere and expression.
Hess loves to go out, wandering through the Brabant countryside, along the banks of the Dommel or on the French coast at picturesque harbours. Everywhere he finds inspiration to sketch or paint on the spot. His works breathe a sense of calm and security, rooted in his love for nature. Especially his summer and autumn landscapes, executed in warm earth tones, succeed in conveying that mood. In his village scenes, market tableaux and still lifes, a touch of wistfulness often comes through — an emotion inextricably linked with his work.
In the moments when Henri Hess concentrates fully on the impression, he is at his best: a painter who does not merely depict, but manages to capture the experience itself.
