A Japanese wooden lacquered lidded box with raised gold maki-e cranes in flight on a vivid red ground, measuring 14 cm high by 28 cm wide and 28 cm deep, dating from circa 1900–1910 and 1920–1930, in good antique condition with age-related wear.
Description from the seller
This is a Japanese wooden lacquered lidded box, decorated with an elegant raised gold maki-e design featuring cranes in flight and stylized pine branches. The vivid red lacquer ground is complemented by finely detailed gold decoration, with the crane motifs rendered in relief, creating depth and a strong visual presence.
The cranes are executed with delicate line work and layered gold application, suggesting skilled traditional craftsmanship. The gold decoration appears slightly raised, indicating the use of textured maki-e techniques rather than flat printing.
The box is constructed from wood and finished with lacquer throughout, including the interior. Its generous size and refined decoration suggest it was intended for ceremonial use, special storage, or formal presentation rather than everyday utility.
Based on materials, technique, and surface aging visible in the lacquer and gilding, this piece is considered an antique or early vintage work.
