Très lourd pour sa taille

Cette amulette très atypique représente un Bouddha assis en méditation, relevant d’une production ethnique et folklorique laotienne. L’iconographie est sobre, le Bouddha est figuré dans la position de la prise de la terre à témoin. L’esthétique est volontairement rustique et archaïsante, très éloignée des bronzes raffinés des ateliers royaux de Luang Prabang. 

Le visage se distingue par des traits grossiers et puissamment stylisés.
Les yeux sont incisés en amande, étroits et presque fermés. Nez large, triangulaire, fortement saillant. Une bouche fine, simplement gravée. Des arcades sourcilières marquées d’un trait continu. La tête est surmontée d’une coiffe conique élancée, interprétation populaire de l’ushnisha, accentuant la verticalité et donnant à la figure une présence presque totémique. 

Le corps présente un modelé sommaire avec un torse triangulaire aux plans abrupts et des épaules étroites. Le drapé est réduit à quelques lignes incisées traversant le buste. La base circulaire épaisse et irrégulière renforce l’aspect ethnique de l’objet. Les surfaces conservent des traces d’outils et une texture rugueuse, témoignant d’une fonte artisanale locale, destinée à un usage votif.

La patine brune ancienne, profonde et nuancée, laisse apparaître des reflets dorés sur les arêtes saillantes, accentuant les volumes anguleux et l’expression hiératique de la figure.
