Two walnut Louis XIII style chairs in antique condition from France, measuring about 110 cm high, 41 cm wide, 60 cm deep with a seating height around 50 cm.
Description from the seller
2 chairs in Louis XIII style. Good condition.
Height: 110 cm
Width: 41 cm
Overall length: 60 cm
Seat depth: about 50 cm.
Quilted with raised floral motifs, copper rivets.
The first photos are of the first chair in its original condition; you will notice the change because the second one starts with the photo where there is a big red 2 and the chair supports a small 'splint' in the back that allows it to be used as on the first day.
The first chair has some corrosion on a few rivets above the rear feet at the level of the seat.
- Structure and joinery: The seat frame is made of solid wood with mortise-and-tenon joints pegged with wooden pegs (pegs) — visible at the junctions of the feet and the rails. No screws, nails or modern metal staples — everything is consistent with a 17th-century handcrafted construction. The wooden pegs are irregular and patinated, a sign of manual manufacture without industrial tools.
- Internal padding: You can see a jute fabric or old webbing under the tapestry, with what appears to be padding made of vegetal or animal hair (typical of the 17th century, not synthetic foam).
All these elements (traditional joinery, uneven patina, natural wear, absence of modern elements) unequivocally confirm that this is an authentic chair from the Louis XIII** era (circa 1620-1650, France).
It is a straight chair (side chair) typical of bourgeois or noble ensembles for dining rooms or reception rooms, with Flemish influences (twists and beads in a rosary pattern).
- Louis XIII style – turned feet with twists and balls, H-shaped stretchers, tall rectangular back, carved floral motifs (rosettes on the feet).
- Materials: solid walnut (veining and dark patina confirmed), floral tapestry redone (19th century, jacquard or petit point), brass nails.
- Overall condition: Good for its age – stable, but with normal wear (inactive worm holes, patina).
In-person delivery or shipment by parcel post.
